Tips For Parents: How To Improve Math Skills

Almost every student struggles with math at some point. This is because math always builds on what was taught in the lesson before. If a student didn’t fully understand a concept or forgot something, it’s very likely that they’ll struggle to keep up.

Here are some tips to help:

1. Apply math to real life situations

Especially when students are young, try to implement numerical terminology in their day-to-day vocabulary. This can be as simple as saying “the cup is full” or “the cup is half full” during breakfast. This will help kids see the relationship more clearly later on.

2. Create a positive relationship with numbers

through games

For a lot of students, numbers can be scary. This is because it’s not necessarily something they are familiar with or presented with in real life (or so they think).  That’s why using games like Monopoly can help students experience numbers first-hand in a lighter environment.

3. Make sure concepts are understood, not just learned.

For a lot of students, numbers can be scary. This is because it’s not necessarily something they are familiar with or presented with in real life (or so they think).  That’s why using games like Monopoly can help students experience numbers first-hand in a lighter environment.

4. Have them learn the lesson at their own individual pace

Every child learns differently. Many parents book private tutors so that they can go over the homework in a way that the student can best understand. For some students this means more visual tools, while others learn better by listening to something more than once, whereas a third student might need to use real life examples that include their interests and hobbies. These little things make all the difference, especially at young ages which is why parents find experienced tutors that can teach based on unique and individual learning styles, making it the most effective way to study.
